The Benefits of Counselling with Intern Counsellors

At MindSpa Mental Health Centre, our intern counsellors are graduate-level student therapists completing their practicum as part of a qualifying psychotherapy program. They are not yet registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO) and therefore practice under the direct supervision of a qualified Registered Psychotherapist.

Currently, all intern counsellors at MindSpa are supervised by **Tina Wilston, M.Ed., RP**, a licensed member of the CRPO in good standing. Supervision is an essential part of ensuring ethical, effective, and high-quality care.

Working with an intern counsellor offers several unique benefits:

More Accessible Counselling

Counselling sessions with an intern counsellor are offered at a reduced rate of **\$125 per 50-minute session**, compared to our standard rates of \$158–\$200. Additionally, a **sliding scale fee** is available for low-income clients and can be applied to sessions with intern counsellors, making therapy more financially accessible.

Energy & Up-to-Date Training

Intern counsellors bring fresh perspectives, enthusiasm, and current knowledge from their academic training. They are immersed in the latest research and evidence-based practices, often applying these modern approaches under supervision to tailor support to your needs. Their openness and eagerness to learn contribute to a vibrant therapeutic experience.

Supervision by Experienced Professionals

Interns receive regular and structured supervision from experienced Registered Psychotherapists. This means your care is reviewed and supported by a second clinician, ensuring quality and alignment with ethical and clinical standards. Many clients appreciate knowing that their therapist has a dedicated supervisor invested in supporting their progress.

More Personalized Attention

Intern counsellors typically maintain a smaller caseload than fully registered practitioners. As a result, they have more time to reflect, plan, and personalize your care. This allows for thoughtful preparation and a highly individualized approach, enhancing the quality of the therapeutic relationship and outcomes.

Please Note

All clients working with an intern counsellor will be asked to review and sign an informed consent to treatment under supervision prior to beginning therapy. This is a CRPO requirement and an important part of understanding the therapy process.

Welcome, I’m Renad

Hi, and thank you for being here. I’m Renad, a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). I work with individuals aged 7 and up—including children, youth, adults, and older adults—who are facing emotional or psychological challenges and are looking for support in navigating life’s ups and downs.

Many of the people I work with come in feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure of how to move forward. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional regulation, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), life transitions, family concerns, or cultural identity issues, I’m here to support you. I’m especially passionate about creating a safe, affirming space for individuals from marginalized and underrepresented communities.

Before becoming a psychotherapist, I spent several years working as a Behavioural and Educational Therapist, supporting children with developmental and learning needs. That experience taught me a great deal about patience, adaptability, and the power of small steps—and it continues to shape how I work with clients and families today.

In our work together, you can expect a supportive, non-judgmental space where your voice matters. My approach is integrative and person-centered, drawing from modalities like Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and mindfulness-based strategies. Together, we’ll focus on building practical tools, deepening self-understanding, and creating a path toward the changes that matter most to you.

Starting therapy is a brave step. If you feel ready—or even just curious—I’d be honoured to walk alongside you on this journey.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure, you’re not alone—and help is just a click away. Take the first step towards feeling better by booking your FREE 20-minute consultation today. Let’s talk about how we can work together to support your mental health and create a path toward healing. Your well-being matters, and we’re here for you. Book your consultation now.

Meet Michael, with over 25 years of dedicated experience in the mental health field, Michael has established himself as a prominent figure in adolescent and adult mental health, specializing in sex therapy, and addressing sexual dysfunctions and gender identity concerns. He also has extensive experience in mood and anxiety disorders in both adults and adolescents. His compassionate approach, combined with an extensive background in workplace mental health, empowers individuals and organizations to achieve psychological well-being.

Michael:

Welcome! I’m so glad you’re here. My journey in the field of mental health began back in 1998, and ever since, I’ve been deeply committed to supporting individuals on their unique paths to healing and growth. At MindSpa, I believe in the power of personalized therapy, and I work collaboratively with each client to create a welcoming space that caters to your individual needs.

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on supporting adults and adolescents, survivors of trauma, and people affected by mood disorders, especially depression and chronic depression. I’ve been a therapist, a program designer and director, and a consultant to organizations, but my greatest interest is in providing therapy.

I hold a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Manitoba and a Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from the University of Winnipeg. I’m continually pursuing professional development to ensure I provide the best possible support for my clients. My further postgraduate studies in sex therapy and sexuality grew out of an interest in a subject that remains misunderstood, despite the enormous role it plays in our lives and the many social changes in our views on the subject.

I’m also humbled to have received a Ministerial Commendation from Veterans Affairs Canada for my work with veterans, which has deepened my commitment to integrity, respect, and making meaningful contributions to the lives of those I serve. If you’re looking for a caring guide on your journey toward a brighter, healthier future, I would be honored to accompany you. Remember, you don’t have to face this alone—we can explore these paths together.
